Porcelain veneers are thin shells made of durable porcelain that are custom designed at a dental laboratory for each patient. The veneers are made according to the size, shape and color that had been specified by the dentist to accommodate each patient’s needs. They are bonded to the front of the teeth to camouflage any imperfections and to create a beautiful smile.
Veneers are used to treat many dental conditions where imperfections of the teeth are involved. They can be a great alternative to porcelain crowns and will completely reshape your teeth and transform your smile. Even though they are very durable and will last for many years, they are not permanent. In time, they will need to be replaced.
Porcelain veneers are an effective cosmetic tool for a number of reasons. Veneers are used to create an even smile where all of the teeth are uniform, to disguise crooked or poorly shaped teeth, and to cover teeth that are badly stained and/or discolored. They are also used to camouflage teeth that are not the correct size and do not blend well, to cover uneven spacing between teeth, and to hide teeth that are chipped and worn.

Veneers can usually be applied in two dental visits. The procedure will require very little, if any, anesthesia. To prepare the teeth for application, the surfaces are buffed and shaped and a mold is then taken of the teeth. You will then work with your dentist in choosing the shade you want your veneers to be. All of this will take place during the first visit.
On the second visit to the dentist’s office, special liquids are used on the teeth to prepare them for the bonding treatment. The veneers are then attached to the teeth with bonding cement, and a light beam is used to harden the cement and to create a lasting bond between the veneer and the surface of the tooth.
After application of your porcelain veneers, your dentist will go over with you the proper care of your veneers. With the appropriate brushing and flossing, along with regular dental checkups, your veneers should give you a beautiful smile for years to come.
